Team Cameron,
I know it's been too long since my last post but I promise I have been working on a project that should be coming to a close soon. More on that later.
Last fall was a busy one, the Golf Classic was a huge success. As usual we had a great crowd and they enjoyed the food and beverages throughout the day and the post dinner and auction. The Golf Classic Committee put together an awesome event. I would like to thank them first for all of their hard work. In addition, I would like to thank the volunteers for everything they did to make the day run so smoothly. Of course out also be remiss if I did not thank the incredible sponsors that helped either financially or by providing food and beverages to satiate both appetite and thirst throughout the day. Additionally, thank you to those golfers that took a day off work to suffer through (tongue-in-cheek) a day on the links after your big lunch followed by the all-you-can-eat buffet.
As the 2014 GC was my 10th anniversary and the 10th golf tournament just before the shotgun start we recognize all of the people that have participated in all 10 events. I have a picture of me with this group of people but more on that later.
Does this sound like a day you would like to be involved in? Well, the Committee is at it again. The 2015 Mark Cameron Golf Classic is scheduled for Friday, September 18 at the Deer Creek Golf Club in Overland Park. More on that later.
In October I was able to make the seventh game of the World Series. My State Farm agent Debbie Swinney gave me two tickets (shameless plug) and my brother-in-law and I watched a great game. Obviously it didn't end like I wanted it to but it was a great game nonetheless. By the way, if you're looking for insurance, State Farm is there. (Did anyone else hear that tune playing your head?)
The family got together in October to celebrate our dads 80th birthday. It's always a good time to get us together and this time we hired a professional photographer it's been awhile but I will try to attach the family photo.
In November Brown Bag Liquor and Debbie Swinney State Farm cohosted another wine tasting. It had a Back To Prom theme with streamers, confetti and a killer band. In addition to the entertainment everyone was well fed with signature dishes from area restaurants and of course the wine was flowing with 100 types to choose from. I have not heard a date yet for the 2015 wine tasting but I will let you know more on that later.
I did get out over this school year to give a number of speeches to local audiences, not quite as many as I had set my goal for, but I introduced myself to six or seven different groups. I spoke with a couple of local Schools of Nursing and four or five middle schools. I would really like to get out in front of 12 to 15 different groups but I heard from a number of middle schools this spring that with the new state testing they didn't have time available to have me speak. In addition, I'm working on some new marketing material but more on that later.
I was fortunate enough to enjoy the Royals final game last year and with the start of a new baseball season I was able to make opening day 2015 as well. Thanks Rick Funke w/ Waddell & Reed for the tickets. Sure, another shameless plug but if you're looking to invest in your savings give him a call.
It was a cold winter here in Kansas and seemed especially long which kept me close to home. I guess I'm getting soft in my old age but I hate to get out in the cold. So now in early May I'm finding myself outside as much as possible. I'm back to taking my chair on strolls through the neighborhood. There is a nearby Bar and Grill that serves toasted sandwiches and I look forward to many trips via wheelchair over the next five or six months.
So it'later, depending on when you checked in here you may or may not be aware that I have been working on a couple of new web sites. I was looking for some help making some changes to my web site when wrong with Shamrock Solutions offered to help me with the cost of getting both web sites online. The first site www.TeamCameron.org has been upgraded to not only introduced myself and the amazing people of Team Cameron, my support group for so many years starting in the hospital. In addition, you will be a will find information and registration for the Golf Classic and Wine Tastings. Including sponsor information and links to support the sponsors. That site has needed some updating for a while now but I was putting it off because I wanted to get it all done at once.
The second site I have been working on is www.MakeaSplashInc.com. I had mentioned in previous posts about the 501(c)3 not-for-profit venture geared toward helping the newly injured and their families and allows me to speak with audiences about what I have learned from life in a wheelchair. I'm hopeful this second site will generate more interest in my public speaking and help get my name in front of the newly injured and their families looking for answers. I still remember the months after my accident that my family and support system had questions about directions to turn and hope that I can help others going through their difficult times.
I definitely don't know all the answers but I do know enough to get someone started. Check out my sites (if they're not up yet please check back in one week) and pass them both around, I'm pretty proud of them.
I hope you all are doing well.
My best, Mark
