Team Cameron,
The Mark Cameron Golf Classic is here and gone. I would like to thank all of those that were able to participate. The Golf Committee did an amazing job putting everything together. The volunteers that took a day off of work, away from their families and their regular schedules to help with everything from entertaining our guests, icing down beverages, set-up, taking photographs and clearing tables. You guys are an amazing crew.
I would also like to thank our sponsors. They invest money and product into the tournament for what I would like to think is a good cause and I hope you all will consider spending your money with their businesses when given the chance. I have included their names and web sites on my web site under Sponsors.
A big thank you to our Tournament Sponsor Red Development and the Platinum level sponsors - Brown Bag Liquor, Chipotle, Texas Roadhouse, Earth Contact Products/American Barbecue Systems, Deffenbaugh Industries, and the MacMeniman Family. The Eagle sponsors are listed as follows Marine Bulk Heading, Pop Franke and Breck Nickell w/ Henry Industries. The additional sponsors Park Range Construction, Thermal King Windows, Debbie Swinney of State Farm, Bi-State Rubber, Chris Funke w/ Waddell & Reed, Faultless Linen, Smith Family Mortuary, Wichita Urology and Poettker Construction.
Last but not least, I would like to say Thanks to the golfers. I know it's tough duty to take a day off work strap on your cleats and get in and out of that the golf cart 80-100 times. I'm sure that that sunny and 80° day meant that you had to put on sun lotion at least once if not twice and that's not easy work. Let's not forget the beverages don't get themselves to your mouth.
In all seriousness, I am honored at the effort by all involved. Thank you golfers and all for taking the day off of work, a day away from your family and a day away from your routine to spend your hard-earned money on greens fees and auction items in an effort to offset my yearly expenses. I wish I could have spent more time with each of you that afternoon but it would have slowed down the play. Feel free to stop by the house anytime you can.
Now this next invitation goes out to everyone. Grab your calendar, laptop or I phone and block out Friday, October 19 for the annual Brown Bag Liquor Wine Tasting. It will be held again this year at the Ball-conference center located near the corner of 151st and Lone Elm. Get your tickets at Brown Bag Liquor www.brownbagliquor.com. They will have 100 types of wine, local restaurants serving food, silent auction items and a few hundred of the best-looking and brightest people from the area.
It finally started to rain around here. I did have a bit of a surprise. Much like all of the homes throughout the Midwest mine was built on clay soils. I noticed a couple of new cracks in the drywall and upon inspection of the perimeter of my house I found obvious signs of settlement. As you can imagine, any settlement in the soil also allows the structure to settle. At that point my dad laid a soaker hose around the house to help moisten the soil to slow down any additional settlement.
Within a few days of drowning my foundation with water we were also fortunate to have 5+ inches of rain in 24 hours. I was amazed that we received it that much rain in such a short amount of time and there were no reports of flooding. The soil so dry from three plus months of drought soaked up every ounce of water. It's amazing to see the green coming back to the grass and a return of some of the plants around the house.
The Rehab Institute of Kansas City held that annual fundraiser that I enjoy so much. The Bacon Fest was another great success. We spent the day eating everything bacon. Who doesn't enjoy Eggs Benedict with bacon, bacon bratwurst, bacon pizza, bacon vodka bloody Mary's, bacon brownies and even bacon fresh off a skillet? Yes I ate my fill and would have gone back for more but I didn't want to be a pig!!!
I made it to both the Johnson County Fair and the Olathe Old Settlers Day since my last post. Of course I enjoyed as much food as anyone should from the kitchen on wheels. I was able to enjoy my annual funnel cake, walking taco, all beef gyro (they didn't have lamb), a grange pup and even a deep-fried twinkie (I won't be making that mistake again). I also enjoyed checking out the crowd and seeing old friends.
I'm sure you are all worried that after those last two paragraphs about my clogged arteries and potential weight gain. I'm still riding my bicycle 40 miles a week and working my upper body as much as possible. But in an effort to keep my girth in check and to show my support for a great cause I participated in my first 5K(that is 3.2 miles).
A year ago a friend of mine died in car accident and a group of volunteers put together a memorial run in her honor. It was held in her hometown, Council Grove. There were about 350 participants that showed their support on a chilly wet Saturday morning. It was a casual run for most participants with some pushing strollers and walking along visiting with friends. The funds raised are going toward scholarships for the local Council Grove high school graduates. I didn't set any land speed record's but I had a great time participating. I will do my best to let you know ahead of time about the 2nd “Mother K 5K” Fun Run in honor of Katie Gant sometime next September.
With September of 2012 here and gone I also celebrated the 8th anniversary of my accident. It's funny over the years the phone calls I get around the week of my accident. I can understand where people are a little unsure how to even approach the subject but for those that know me the best I'm sure it doesn't come as a surprise that I find it easiest to approach with humor.
I woke up that morning thinking how my life had changed and found myself smiling over some of the humor and practical jokes we had used these last eight years. I remember relying on my sense of humor during some of my more trying times but even more importantly using that same sense of humor to help others understand that I was doing okay.
It caused me to think of the time when I first returned home that a group of us were debating on how I would get someone's attention in the other room of my house. One of my family members suggested I ring a bell but when I asked how, they teared up at the fact that they had forgotten. I laughed it off and quickly reminded them that if they couldn't laugh about the mistake, we are going to lose this battle.
As I lay there thinking about the importance of humor in your everyday life I considered what I told my family member and realized that it was the same logic I had used all along. I came up with this quote that morning and it seemed to fit so many situations.

Have a great October. I hope see you at the wine tasting.
