Team Cameron,
It's been an unusual month and a half since my last post. I've actually been kind of busy considering how I spent 2 1/2 weeks. I've made a trip to Emporia with my nephew for a senior college visit. We enjoyed the afternoon tour of the campus a short walk through downtown and a visit to my old fraternity so I could show Riley what he could be looking for as a college experience. We had a good time, the campus looks good and I think he was impressed.
St. Patrick's Day I got rolling early with friends and made the trip downtown to experience a true Kansas City favorite, the annual St. Patrick's Day Kansas City style. We started with breakfast at Brown's Market and then moved the crew a few blocks away to watch the parade and then we followed the masses on the pilgrimage to Mecca. That's right, Westport on St. Patrick's Day but instead of corned beef and cabbage for lunch we enjoyed some great Thai food. We also enjoyed an hour or so of classic people watching. By the looks of things most of them got started earlier than we did. What a great time.
Sometime in March we made a change to my seat cushion to adjust my overall position and in doing so I made a mistake. I wasn't sure if I wanted to tell you all that I got a wound on my butt that required 2 1/2 weeks in bed but I guess if I bumped into one of you and you had spent 2 1/2 weeks laid up with a foot or leg injury I would've heard all about it. I will leave out most of the detail but I did get a reality check. I know after talking with other quadriplegics and people in the medical business and I have been very fortunate with my health and that spending less than a month in bed over the last seven plus years is uncommon for someone in a wheelchair. I guess the 2000 miles a year I spend strapped to the back of my bicycle pays off. The muscle I've developed and maintained not only protects me but it helps speed up the healing process.
During my stay in bed I celebrated my 42nd birthday and Easter and every afternoon I watched TV as family and friends turned the channel answered my phone or worked on small projects around the house. As much as I enjoy the company I looked forward to the days that I could return to my chair and the freedom it allowed. Thank you to everyone that helped and I hope I don't have to call on you again for another seven or so years.
I made it out of bed just-in-time for opening day at the Royals Stadium. It was a belated birthday party a group of my buddies put together. Other than the loss it was a beautiful day (sunny and 75) with a sold-out crowd in fact we were fortunate to buy tickets at the gate from a friendly scalper with standing room available. That of course doesn't bother me any, I enjoy the game from the comfort of my wheelchair. Thanks dudes, let's do it again next year.
I was invited to speak to the eighth-grade class at Prince of Peace school in Olathe. There were about 70 or so in attendance and I think they enjoyed my speech. I can only base that on the fact that they clapped upon my completion. I hope they invite me back next year. Angela, thanks again for setting it up.
I am starting another exercise program and want to invite you or challenge you to join me. On Sunday June 10th I am participating in my first organized 5k run. The Rehab Institute is hosting a fundraising Run, Walk, Roll or Stroll and if your Sunday plan is to sit around drinking coffee while debating strapping on your running/walking shoes or just sitting around watching TV you should meet me at the Berkley Riverfront Park for some exercise. Check out http:/www.rehabkc.org/index.asp?ID=44 for information.
Another reminder the golf committee has set the date for Friday, September 21 to host the 8th Annual Mark Cameron Golf Classic. The entire function will be held at the Deer Creek Golf Course. We are moving to a golf course in town that can accommodate the Post party on site. The obvious benefit would be eliminating the drive from the course to Prince of Peace and it helps that Deer Creek is a beautiful golf course and I've heard they host a great tournament. Get out your calendar, laptop or smart phone and save September 21st for a day of the links.
I hope you all are enjoying this spring weather it's time you get off the couch and get some exercise. June the 10th is not that far away and you will want to put some miles on those shoes before June the 10th because you'll never hear the end of it if I beat you across the finish line.
Take care, Mark
