Team Cameron,
I am sorry if you missed this year’s Wine Tasting. As usual Brown Bag Liquor and Debbie Swinney hosted another fantastic event. Everyone enjoyed nearly 100 different wines, a dozen beers, a variety of spirits, a number of local restaurants serving their specialties dishes and an amazing silent auction.
If you didn’t make it this year you will want to make sure to make it next year. If you made it this year be sure to keep Brown Bag in mind when looking for your beer, wine and spirits and when looking for dinner out please keep the following restaurants in mind. Austins, Granite City, Johnny’s, Longhorn Steakhouse, Wil Jenny’s, Nick & Jake’s, Salty Iguana, Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse and Sunset Grill each of them donated a lot of hours and great food to the event.
In early October I attend the Olathe School District’s Wall of Honor dinner where a number of Olathe’s teachers and notable alumni were recognize for their accomplishments both in the classrooms and throughout their lives. It was great to see the Honorees and how they have improved and impressed Olathe with their services and lives.
My family got together multiple times to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries throughout the month. Happy Birthday to Nephew Preston, Dad, Laura & Susan and Happy 54th Anniversary to Mom and Dad. As the 6th of their seven kids I would like to thank them for all the time they spent together those first 11 years of their marriage.
October is Disability Awareness Month and with that the City of Olathe committee that I have been appointed to, Persons with Disabilities Advisory Board helps to organize two events geared toward the disabled getting back to work and promoting services for the disabled. We hosted a job fair in mid-October where we offered a class in resume writing and mock interviews as well as introducing members of the disabled community to a dozen local companies. In addition, we cohosted an expo at the Great Mall of Olathe where services for the disabled, disabled artists and local organizations could get together in one place and the disabled community could visit with any service for introductions and questions. They were both excellent events and extremely helpful.
My big news of the month and in fact my year would be the approval of Make a Splash! Inc. as a 501(c)3. I have had a number of people suggest that I should start one over the last eight years but it took seven years for me to understand that I could share my education with others for their benefit. The 501(c)3 will allow Make a Splash! Inc. to accept payment toward services and any donations made will be tax-deductible. After working on this application process for over a year I am excited to have everything finalized. I look forward to getting this new endeavor rolling.
The Mission Statement:
Over the last eight years I have shown my house, equipment and lifestyle to hundreds of people in the industry, therapy and end-user for the purpose of educating. I have also talked with schoolchildren, professional level audiences and organizations about living with a disability and emphasize the importance of developing positive character, making good friends and making good choices in life. I hope with this 501(c)3 status I will be recognized as having a message to share.
It seems that November is the month everyone reflects on what they are most thankful for and if you are even semi active on Facebook I'm sure you have seen where people are sharing what they are thankful for each day. If you haven't taken the time to reflect on your blessings I would like to remind you of how important it is to recognize your value and the value you enjoy each day. You should take a few minutes to look back over your life and what you have done. Be sure to include those blessings that could be overlooked like your loved ones, your health your friends and your future. After counting your blessings you can log on to Facebook and share them with everyone or grab your phone and make a few calls to let those around you know that you're thinking of them.
Have a great Thanksgiving.
Love Mark
