Team Cameron,
I'm going to start out with a reminder to get your golf tournament registration sent in if you plan to play this year. I expect with the new course, it’s location and the post party on site that we should be looking at a full tournament. That is not to say that we don't need each of you but the committee is predicting a number of new teams through some of their marketing and networking channels. If you are looking for registration information you can contact Josh Carr jcarr1112@yahoo.com.
I always like to give a plug for the people and businesses that choose to advertise or donate to the tournament. This year I will have to give a big thank you to Red Development. They have participated over the last couple of years but this year they stepped up to the tee box as the Tournament Sponsor. If you are looking to build a shopping center, baseball field or subdivision be sure to give them a call. They are one of Kansas City's largest commercial developers. Now if you are looking to advertise your own company or product, feel free to contact Scott Lee scottleeatl@yahoo.com to get the process started. Every July the cyclist from Push America make their way across United States. The city of Olathe has been selected as their two-day stop and I have been organizing their adventures for the last six years. It's always a pleasure to meet this group of young men year after year as they spend their summer cycling from town to town raising money and awareness for the needs of the disabled.
The previous three years we have been able to entertain them with an evening at the Royals Stadium but with the All-Stars in town I found something equally entertaining. We contacted a local wheelchair basketball team and hosted an evening at a local gymnasium for a little challenge. The cyclist from Push America definitely got a workout as they pushed wheelchairs from end to end of the court. With or without the Royals game next year, I am hopeful we can make time for another round of wheelchair basketball.
A friend of mine just opened a local watering hole/deli in the downtown Olathe area. It's across the street from the courthouse and a quick wheelchair ride from my house. I've been there a few times to have a sandwich and meet old friends and suspect that because of its location I may become a regular. If you find yourself looking for a quick bite and a beverage give Dub V’s a try. (This is not a paid endorsement-yet)
For those of you living outside the Midwest or possibly under a rock without the benefit of television or Internet, to say it has been excessively hot is a massive understatement. Anything above 90° usually keeps me close to an air conditioner. It even makes getting in and out of the car for quick trips around town difficult. As you may remember I don't regulate heat like the rest of you but I will on occasion carry a small cooler with ice packs and use those under my hands to help cool me off.
I did however make it out to watch a little T-Bones Baseball a couple of weeks ago with my sister Susan and a dozen or so coworkers. We were fortunate to be sitting in the air-conditioned suite purchased by one of Susan's coworkers (Dave) at last year's wine tasting. Dave I'm sorry you were not able to make it but I hope to see you at the golf tournament. The T-Bones won the game and entertained us through the evening and the air-conditioned suite kept us comfortable in the sweltering heat.
I was raised in a good Catholic family: I was one of seven kids, we went to church every Sunday and on the holidays, attended a Catholic grade school, and prayed before every meal. I explain this because with all of that education and time spent in church and school it wasn't until my 30s that I really understood that God had a plan.
About 10 years ago I got a phone call at the office that a good friend of mine had been killed in an accident. It was the first time I had had to deal with the loss of a close friend. As you can imagine I was in shock and didn't understand why something like that could happen. I'll never forget the conversation I had later that day with one of my sisters. She told me, "God has a plan and that my friend was in it.” She went on to say that although I hurt at the loss of this friend that I should be assured he was in a better place. I don't think it helped in dealing with the pain of the loss but it answered a question as to why sometimes things happen that don't necessarily fall in line with our own plans.
I often reflect on that conversation I had with my sister that miserable afternoon. Honestly it does give me strength when dealing with hurt and loss. I remember during my time at Craig and how mad I was that although He has a plan my paralysis was definitely not my plan. It took some time to wrap my head around it, in fact I still find myself with questions, but I'm sure it's all part of His plan.
A couple of years ago I spent some time with another quadriplegic and at one point during the evening things got real serious. He asked me about my attitude and what seemed like a willingness to accept my lot in life. I told him that He has a plan and that we were in it. I told him that I had no idea why either one of us would be in a wheelchair but that I estimated that we were on a path that He designated.
Last month a friend of mine passed away after losing a seven-year battle with cancer. She fought the good fight but now she is in a better place. Too soon to say the least but according to His plan it was time. I can't imagine what her husband (another good friend of mine) is going through over these past few weeks but I wish him the best in his battle to cope with the loss.
For the rest of you battling with a change in direction that is beyond your control keep in mind that He has a plan and we are all in it. I know at times that doesn't help when dealing with change or loss but He will guide you if given the chance. Just keep your head up.
Have a great day. Get some exercise. Mark
