Team Cameron,
Do you ever get a song stuck in your head? Over the last couple of weeks I have been singing one song in particular. www.youtube.com/watch?v=_x5CamITJEA I hope you will enjoy it as well. It is the type of song that gets stuck in your head for days.
I missed my July 1 post for a couple of reasons but, you know what they say about excuses. It would be easier to admit that I was lazy and just didn't get it done. Then I got busy.
The month of June for the most part was quiet and somewhat uneventful with one notable exception. I was invited to speak to the Northland Professionals of Aging. They are an organization dedicated to the needs of the elderly, disabled and infirmed. I shared my story and a list of my everyday items.
I finally put together my 'Items List'. It's an extensive list of those things I've found most helpful IE my exercise bike, ceiling lift system, the velcro straps I wear on my wrists, the ramps I carry in my van, along with about 20 or so additional items. The list itself also includes contact names and web sites to order your own.
I will eventually post the list to my web site but until then, if you or someone you know would like a copy, feel free to e-mail me and I'll send it to you. I would like to thank Kris and Amy for giving me the inspiration to make the list and the invitation to speak with the NPA.
Over the last few months I also spent some time organizing the annual stop of the cyclists from Push America on their Journey of Hope. It is the annual bicycle trip of 25 to 30 young men starting in the Seattle with Washington, DC as their destination. This group of eager cyclists ride their bikes across the country in the effort to raise money and bring awareness to the needs of the disabled.
I started working with this group 7 years ago. I have helped them find a place stay, sponsored dinners and entertainment for the two days a year they make Olathe their home. It's definitely gotten easier to do because of the connections I've made and in the generosity of the people that I have gotten involved in the cause, but each year I try to top what I did the previous.
The cyclists tell me that they are always looking forward to the Olathe stop because the previous groups have always talked about what a great time they have while here. When they arrive by police escort and are recognized by the mayor of Olathe and follow-up with a massage therapist after checking into Kansas School for the Deaf. According to them, it's one of the only stops where they get beds with sheets and hot shower.
We are also the only stop on the route that has tickets sponsored by a MLB team, the Kansas City Royals and an on-field introduction for the organization. This year we topped the years past and it was from an organization that I didn't contact. The Olathe Fire Department heard about the arrival ceremony and volunteered to hang a 25 foot flag from atop a ladder truck extended 45 feet in the air.
It was the perfect setting for the team as they finish their ride to pose for their picture in the Olathe. I was able to spend a lot of time with this group of young men while they were here and each one told me that Olathe was far and away their best stop. As they rolled out of town, to Sedalia, MO and points east, they did so with an escort provided by both the Olathe Police and Fire Department.
I would like to wish the gentleman from Push America a safe trip and let them know that I am looking forward to their return next July. Now for the rest of you, I'm looking for something to top the 2011 visit. Does anyone know how to hold the weather at 80° and offer a 20 mile an hour tailwind?
If you would like to follow along with the groups progress as they make their way across United States you can find their updated posts and pictures here; www.pushamerica.org/johtajournal.aspx
I have a couple of dates for you all to take note. Saturday, August 27th the Rehabilitation Institute is hosting their annual Baconfest. www.BaconFestKC.com They are raising money for the newly injured children and adults by providing both education and equipment and helping them to get back on their road to life. The bacon celebration raises money through both corporate sponsors and entry fees.
I am told they celebrate everything bacon. As you can imagine, it's on my list of things to do. If you want to find me on the last Saturday in August, rolled down your window and follow the smell of bacon.
The next event you need to be certain is on your calendar would be a day on the links in Springhill, Kansas. The golf committee is meeting on a regular basis and planning to host the seventh annual Team Cameron Golf Classic on Friday, September 23 at Sycamore Ridge.
Friday's event, like last year, should start around noon with lunch from Chipotle and an excellent round of golf followed by dinner, awards and a chance to win many top shelf auction items. Make sure you make plans to join us, you don't have to play golf to have a good time at the post party dinner.
As soon as I figure out how to link the registration to this e-mail you will find all of the pertinent information here but until then, e-mail me and I can e-mail you a copy. Be sure when you e-mail me to include your mailing address and I will pass it along to the committee and they will be certain to update you with additional informations.
Have a great rest of the month. You will hear from me again. Until then, all of my best.
Love, Mark
