Team Cameron,
It has been an eventful month here in the Midwest. We have had a number of nasty storms in my area and beyond. We have all seen the pictures of the devastation and I'm sure, like me, prayed for both the survivors and those less fortunate.
Just before my accident I made a trip to Pierce City, Missouri just a couple of weeks after a tornado decimated the main street. I have some relatives living there and I spent a day there helping to clean up around their farm. That afternoon my aunt and uncle drove us through town to witness the devastation. It was unbelievable.
We've all heard the sirens and had our television shows interrupted by "those annoying meteorologists” drone on and on about some potential cloud that we should be watching. I remember coming home from that trip with a little different attitude toward those meteorologists. Witnessing the incredible power of Mother Nature will make you feel very small.
If you have been following my blog over the last couple of months you have heard that I am trying to get into Public Speaking. I have shared my story in a public forum to a number of middle school students and have just recently started talking with adults.
A month ago I was contacted by my cousin, Tricia, she invited me to speak during her company Safety Day Seminar. From my understanding the seminar was to be based on water safety and diving awareness. I'm not much of a nautical expert but I know a thing or two about diving.
The real interesting part of this presentation was the location. The company is located on the north side of Joplin. I have easily spoken to with a few thousand people in the last 6 1/2 years about spinal cord injuries, post injury exercise, lifestyles, pulmonology and ADA home remodeling. I was concerned the group will be about as interested in hearing about the lung exercises of quadriplegic with an accessible home as I would be taking a class on playing the guitar left-handed while riding a unicycle.
I was not surprised when I got the call the week after the tornado that the Safety Day was cancelled. They are a vinyl siding manufacturing company and I am sure they are busy putting their town back together both personally and professionally. I do hope they are able to pull together as a community and rebuild soon. Although the Safety Day was postponed indefinitely I look forward to the opportunity to talk with the company when they reschedule.
Memorial Day was here and gone I hope you all enjoy the extra day off. I am sure you enjoyed your weekend at the Lake or time with the family and possibly completed that much-needed yard work. Don't forget the price that was paid for our Memorial Day. It's never too late to say a prayer for those men and women that paid the ultimate price and while you're at it be sure to pray for those still fighting. If you get the chance to make a phone call or drop an e-mail to thank those active or retired service people that gave their time so that we could enjoy our freedoms and that extra day off work in May.
Love, Mark
PS - The Team Cameron Golf Classic is scheduled for Friday, September 23. Mark your calendars for a round of golf just like last year we will be at Sycamore Ridge in Springhill.
