I forgot to post that we have scheduled the Team Cameron 2011 Golf Classic for Friday, September 23rd. Mark your calendars.
Team Cameron,
April has come and gone and the weather is finally warming up. You can bet I'm enjoying my time in the sun. It a beautiful 85° on this first Saturday of May. I'm sure there must be some connection between the Big Guy and our mothers. Why else would we have such a beautiful weekend just in time for Mother's Day?
I hope each of you has taken a moment to thank your mother for what she has given you. I for one would like to apologize to all but my six siblings because we know who the number one Mom is and the rest of you have to call her Edna or Mrs. Cameron. Thanks Mom. I love you.
As luck would have it, the annual Team Cameron Bowling Event scheduled on April 9th happened to fall on another beautiful spring day. The number of participants was lower this year but everyone that showed up had a great time. Next year we will be sure to schedule the bowling event earlier in the year hoping for bad weather to ensure additional participation. Thanks to all of those that came out, I will see you all again next year.
I had mentioned in my last post that I am looking to get more involved in motivational speaking. I have been speaking with one of the local junior high school and have also talked with the 6th, 7th and 8th classes at my alma mater, St. Paul's gradeschool.
Last month I was also invited to speak to a group of business professionals at a regional conference of insurance agents. I had a great time sharing my story and I think they enjoyed hearing about my recovery, my attitude and of course I gave credit where credit was due. I let them know about my incredible support network, Team Cameron, and everything you do for me.
Please feel free to contact me if you know of a local group or organization that would be interested in hearing my story. I will do what I can to workaround a schedule but I have not yet figured out how to accommodate any overnight travel.
I took a few minutes yesterday to call an old friend, one of my nurses from Craig Hospital. Although I checked out of that hospital over six years ago it didn't take long to get caught up. We laughed about the number of practical jokes she endured during my visit but I also know that she helped me deal with my injury in so many ways.
Some of you may recall the story of The Blue Bar Stool, well it is still around. She told me it is covered with names and dates and that the nurses don't let it off of their floor. Knowing the history of the chair it causes me to think of the stories that chair could tell.
During my stay at Craig hospital we had asked a cousin to pick up a bar stool to allow the person sitting next to my bed a higher vantage than the typical hospital furniture. It allowed my family, friends and hospital staff to sit beside my bed at eye level.
On my last day at Craig we decided the chair should remain with the hospital. We signed and dated the chair and passed it along to another patient in the hopes that they may recognize and potentially solve their newest problems a spinal cord injury presents. We told them to enjoy the chair but passed it along after leaving their signature.
Some of my most intense conversations about my accident and recovery were taken place with one of my family, friends or hospital staff sitting on that chair. I'm sure that chair has been witness to more than six years of the prayers, tears and celebrations. I can only hope the signatures on that chair have the support system I do and that are making the most of their lives with a spinal cord injury.
I love you mom, you are number one.
