Team Cameron,
April is here which brings a number of blessings. Obviously this change in the season is something we all enjoy. In fact over the next couple of weeks you will find me spending a little time enjoying the sunshine on my patio much like a lizard on a rock.
Another blessing, you can verify this with my mother, each April 2nd for the last 41 years we have celebrated the day of my birth. This year I spent one evening at Austin's for dinner and a beer with friends and the next evening the family got together for my favorite meal. Everything falls second to my moms Turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy.
With this warmer weather I look forward to spending more evenings outside. Last year I started exercising a little more (I guess that's what you would call it) with the Quad Squad. We would go for walks on around the neighborhood. Of course I might get a little winded navigating around the occasional pothole. But can you imagine how tired the Quad Squadder (great name huh) would get after chasing me for 4 miles at about 8 miles an hour? The battery on this chair just doesn't let up. I should be dressed in a pink bunny outfit because as long as I don't run out of breath I will keep going.
In addition to the walks around the neighborhood I will make every attempt to get out to watch the nephews playing soccer or baseball. I still try to be careful when selecting a place to park, I learned my lesson a couple of years ago if you will recall the foul ball that hit me in the head. It's amazing how much you learn after a shot to the noodle. I'm quick to tell the people around me to stay on their toes, they are now sitting next to a "foul ball magnet."
The bowling tournament is tomorrow and we are hoping for a record turnout. The kids will start bowling around 3:30 p.m. and the adults will start bowling around 6:30 p.m. We will be drawing names for our raffle throughout the day. We have a number of gifts for the raffle including toys, gift cards, custom hand-painted bowling pins and at least one aboveground swimming pool. You don't want to miss it.
The golf committee has begun exchanging e-mails and making calls for this year's Team Cameron Golf Classic. They had set the date for Friday, September 23. Mark your calendars and I will let you know more as the information becomes available.
I told you all in my last post about my desire to began a public speaking career and I'm looking forward to its development. I feel I have a number of important messages to pass along and I hope some of them stick. I have also found that with each speaking engagement, a question is asked allowing me to find out a little more about myself.
Last month I spoke with the students at St. Paul's Elementary (the same school I attended nearly 25 years ago) and again it caused me to reflect. I finish each speech giving time for my audience to ask questions and this time one of the teachers nearly stumped me. She asked about my motivation and strength, she wanted to know what helped me through my recovery.
It took me a moment to collect my thoughts but as I looked over the last 6 1/2 years I knew for certain that I gained my strength through this tremendous support network. I then explained how in those early days at the hospital I recall listening as someone read to me the latest post from the web site.
I remember hearing how everyone was so proud of my accomplishments as I rehab in Colorado but I knew that I would have never had the confidence to accomplish what I was doing had it not been strength I gathered from all of those well wishes via cards, packages and of course all of your posts.
So I told her that it was like the "chicken and the egg". I collected my strength from my support but in some way I believe that my support also came from my strength.
I can never say it enough but I will say it again, Thank You for everything you have done.
Love, Mark
PS. Get out and enjoy the weather.
