Hello Team Cameron,
So this is Christmas…
For years our family has exchanged names for Christmas. In addition, we buy stocking stuffers for everyone. You can imagine the chaos that happens at Mom & Dad’s on Christmas Day. With the amount of time we spend shopping, dealing with long lines, overcrowded parking, bad weather, unkind shoppers… do we really stop to appreciate the season?
Bro-in-law Brian shared a Christmas Day story that gave us all something more to appreciate. He was busy with last minute details and frustrated with shopping. – when his attention was caught by a woman handing an envelope to a young mother. He watched with humbled surprise as the Secret Santa disappeared.
The young mother opened the envelope to find a Christmas gift from a complete stranger. She sat in amazement with tears in her eyes as she fingered through the envelope of cash.
Though Brian didn’t know either of these women, it was evident that the envelope was truly a Christmas blessing for the young mother.
Our prayer before the meal focused on our many blessings but this story gave us a new perspective of the True Christmas Spirit. With all of the negative news these days, the true human spirit can be displayed in gestures from one to another as a random act of kindness.
December is gone, and many of you will be reflecting on your lives and habits looking for those items you would like to change. Smoking, eating less candy, joining a gym, spending time with your kids or less time on the computer could seem like attainable goals but I've never been a believer in "cold turkey."
I've never had the fortitude to give anything up 100% but I do have a theory about New Year's resolution. You don't have to give up your facebook account completely, make an effort to cut back. Set your goals to check-in on your friends and family a couple of times a week. Nobody needs to spend that much time talking with your ex from college. If you're smoking three packs a week and want to curb your addiction set your goals for one pack a week.
I think you're getting the picture. As I mentioned before, my propensity to cheat on goals gave me some insight as to a method to attempt some success. This may come as a shock to all, but I do have a couple of habits that giving up may help me to live longer and healthier.
Keep in mind when setting your goals that a New Year's resolution doesn't always have to be about giving something up. We can improve our lives by starting something healthy or helping someone in need. Maybe set a goal to practice Random Acts of Kindness.
I want to wish each of you a Happy New Year and best of luck with those resolutions you have chosen.
God Bless,
Mark
