Hello Team Cameron,
Its been forever since my last post. I guess I just fell out of practice. Initially I didn't write a post because I hadn't done anything worthy to share but it seems I've been so busy that I haven't taken the time to let you know.
And few months ago I had a surprising afternoon call for a good buddy of mine that wanted to stop by for lunch. He invited three other friends and we had a nice two-hour lunch here at 816. Thanks RT, for putting that together. Looking forward to the next time.
I was surprised with a phone call from an old friend, Brandon from Gecko painting. He told me it has been five years since my house was painted and that they would like to have it painted. I accepted his offer and a couple of weeks later a crew of three painted my entire house in two days.
I've known Brandon for more than 30 years but I would never guessed at the age of 10 that our bond would have lasted this long. I look at my nephews and their friends and wonder where they will be 30 years, hopefully painting each other's houses. Thanks again Brandon and Scott the house looks great.
The cyclists from Push America stopped through Kansas City mid July for their annual visit. The School for the Deaf opened their dorms for the gentleman to stay and Texas Roadhouse provided viddles for dinner two night's. One of the members of Persons with Disabilities Advisory Board was able to negotiate a free block of tickets for a night at the Royals game.
The cyclists were then presented on the field just before game time with introductions from the emcee and a video on the Jumbotron. It was a great show and I'm sure they enjoyed it. More to follow…
I've had a couple of meetings with the local power chair provider and we have begun the process of getting me fitted for a new ride. I'm actually test driving a completely different model which may take some getting used to but looks to be more stable and suited to my needs.
A new ride can be a lengthy process but I'm hoping to have it in the next couple of months. I'll let you know when it comes to fruition.
In late July I was able to take a vacation to Durango Colorado to see my brother and his family. I had a couple of sisters, a brother-in-law, my niece and two nephews that made the trip with me. We were able to stay at my sister's house and using my new portable lift equipment might care was seamless.
It's been six years since I'd seen Durango. The last time I had been there was in July just before my accident. The place hasn't changed much, it's a sleepy little western town. I had a great time in Colorado and look forward to my next trip west.
I made my trek again to the East Coast in mid August. My good buddy's Scott and Mike were troopers for our nonstop trip to Washington, DC. We checked into a hotel as guests to the Push America organization. I was invited to watch the arrival ceremony and join them for the post awards reception.
What an amazing group of young men to accomplish riding their bikes 4000 plus miles across the country over the summer. They have not only spent the previous semester making grades but they also were busy raising $10,000 and training for their trip.
We cheered as they rode into DC with a police escort to the lawn just below The Nation's Capital. As they gathered for their team pictures their parents, family, friends and girlfriends cheered them on with everyone wiping tears. The crowd of 400 plus people was eager to celebrate the men's arrival with hugs and pictures.
The three of us spent a couple of days touring the site around DC until their flights out. My care and guide for the rest of my stay was provided by sister Kelly. She flew out on Sunday afternoon and stayed through the duration of my travels.
Our first stop, was of course the open air seafood market on the Potomac. The two of us have stopped there each time we have been to DC and could be considered "regulars." I don't know that I could ever eat too many fresh shucked oysters or crab cakes but I do know my limit when it comes to clam chowder. That stuff can fill you up quick.
If you're looking for great seafood and don't mind eating off a paper plate in a parking lot you can find Captain White's just under the 395 bridge on the Potomac River. It's just across from the Arlington Cemetery.
We moved hotels from DC to Baltimore to get closer to my upcoming week of therapy at the Kennedy Krieger Institute. Tuesday morning I started working with both occupational and physical therapists before meeting with Dr. Sadowski. Each year we start with baseline testing to see where we will be working the rest of the week.
Using the term like "great news" doesn't do justice to what Dr. Sadowski found during my annual check. After a complete check of my body for sensory she let me know just what I wanted to hear. I am still getting return. In fact, I surprise my doctor and a couple of interns with detection of sensations around my ankles.
This doesn't mean that I'll be walking soon but as long as I'm gaining ground then I'm going the right direction. Needless to say I had a great week. After the checkup with the Doc and the workouts with the therapists my body was sore. In fact, they showed me muscles that I could be working that are virtually unused while I sit in his chair. I left Baltimore with a few more goals.
The drive home wasn't so bad. Between Breck, Marc and Kelly we knocked out the 1100 miles in near record time with a detour through Kentucky for a change of venue. Thanks again to everyone that helped make this such a memorable and enjoyable trip.
I've debated over last couple of weeks while watching a very dear friend recover from double aneurysm. She is on the fast-track for recovery with help from the surgeons, the ICU and a lot of prayers. My debate was explaining to her why things like this happen after she came to me with that exact question.
The most logical explanation is that when God give you a near-death experience and you have the opportunity to continue life he has an additional plan for you here on Earth. I've watched her over the past couple of weeks getting stronger through this recovery and I think back to a quote I heard a few years ago.
The Golf Committee is well underway to hosting and other successful event. The wine tasting scheduled for Thursday, September 23 will be bigger and better than last year's event. The Golf Classic Friday, September 24th has changed venue but will still allow 36 teams a great afternoon in Springhill Kansas at the Sycamore Golf Course. Friday night you will find golfers and nongolfers along with family and friends at Prince of Peace for the post party complete with dinner and auction.
Check out my web site at www.teamcameron.org for golf registration information, sponsorship details and auction donations to answer a question. The committee is doing a great job and would love to help you in any way they can. You can also find information on facebook under Team Cameron.
Sorry for the long post but it's been too long and I couldn't decide what to leave out. I hope to see you all September 23rd and 24th. Anna, keep the good work.
