Hello Team Cameron,
What an amazing week for weather. Over the last four days the temperature has dropped down into the 60s and I believe we even set a record low one evening. Last year at this time the comfort Index was above 110 with an early-morning temperature in the mid to upper 80s. You know me, I like the heat.
They are here and gone. The cyclists from Push America made it to town on Sunday morning around 11 o'clock. The Mayor of Olathe welcomed them to town with and awarded them the proclamation by naming July 19, 2009, "Push America Day in Olathe." Their reception went off without a hitch and their visit was enjoyed by everyone that had the opportunity to meet with them.
They told me that they had been looking forward to their visit in Olathe because they had heard so much of it from previous riders. The hospitality of the Kansas School for the Deaf, Texas Roadhouse, The Breakfast Crew, TLC of Kansas City, The Tailgate Party and the KC Royals and so many others really makes for an impressive stop on the route across United States. Thanks to everyone that helped I'm sure they appreciated it and I know I did.
Their stay went according to plan except for the Kansas City Royals rainout. It started raining around 4:30 PM and continued rain through the tailgate party. The gentleman from Push America checked in with the Royals and waited for their turn at the on-field introduction. I talked with the group leader today and he told me that while they waited they got to know the guy that was going to make the first pitch and the girl scheduled to sing the National Anthem. He also mentioned how much they enjoyed playing charades with the Kansas City Royals Cheerleaders. He wanted me to be sure to thank them all.
They will peddle over the next month finishing their ride across United States with a final stop in Washington, DC mid August. I'm sure the summer they spent riding across the country building a bond with their fellow riders while visiting the disabled along the way will be one they never forget. I can't imagine a more satisfying feeling than something like that, they may never understand the impact they bring on so many people for their hard work and sacrifice.
Thanks again to all of the riders and crew for stopping here in Olathe and thanks to all of the volunteers and participants that were able to take time to make their stop so memorable.
Take a look at the three routes to see if they're coming through your town. Feel free to tell them I sent you. www.pushamerica.org/events/te_itinerary.cfm?ride_code=JOH
I continue to invite and challenge each of you to find something in your life to donate or dedicate a little time and effort to someone who needs it. It doesn't take long to stop by an elderly neighbor and check on them once a month. You can offer to help clean up their yard, gutter or garage. It would take a little more effort but you could adopt a family for the holidays be a Big Brother/Big Sister or adopt a child from a foreign country. I think these ideas sound much easier than riding your bike across the United States.
Have a great week. Get out and do something for humanity.
Love, Mark
