Hello,
Many of you probably do not know me. My name is Cameron Birk. I am Lacie Hamlin¡¦s (formally Lacie Birk¡¦s) youngest brother. Lacie called the other day to share the tragic news. She also mentioned a web site to post well wishes for Mark. I must share a story with you that I consider a ¡§classic Cameron story¡¨, of how Mark touched/changed my life as I am sure he has so many.
While Kris and Lacie were living together in Emporia attending ESU, Kris started dating a guy (Donnie) that she worked with at ¡§The Buckle¡¨. (Donnie¡K. Is this when you learned the sales tools that make you successful today ? I remember Lacie coming home to Americus and sharing stories with mom of the two great guys she had meet through Kris. She described to mom how thoughtful and considerate they were. She mentioned Mark and Donnie had offered to take me water skiing one weekend. She felt it would be a great idea as they would be excellent roll models, and help get me excited about going to college. As Lacie had promised mom, they were perfect gentlemen and made it there personal responsibility to enlighten me to the rules of ¡§Beer Etiquette.¡¨ I would like to share those rules with you today, as every time I think of them, I can¡¦t help but smile! Hope they bring you the same joy.
„h Beer Etiquette (Article 1 ¡V Opening of beer) ¡V Mark explained that he was strongly against drinking while driving, didn¡¦t ever see a need for anyone to do so and was very confident that I my self would never be involved in such activity. However¡K should I be riding around on remote Lyon County roads as a passenger there were a few ¡§Beer Etiquette¡¨ rules that I should be aware of. First and foremost, never hand your friend an un-opened beer! Whether you be in a vehicle, fishing at the lake or watching football in your living room. Mark went on to explain that it¡¦s ¡§just good manners¡¨ to open the beer first. And, should your friend be driving (in Mark¡¦s words), ¡§ it¡¦s safe practice!¡¨ Should your friend be utilizing a koozie, insert the fresh beer before returning. As Mark explained¡K ¡§You wouldn¡¦t return a friends car with an empty tank of gas¡¨.
„h Beer Etiquette (Article 2 ¡V Disposal of empty can) ¡V As you all know Mark, you know he enjoys ANY outdoor activity. I believe that is why Mark was so adamant about this part of the ¡§Beer Etiquette¡¨ theory. (Mark¡¦s words) ¡§Under no circumstances are you to ever throw an empty beer can out the window. Not only is it bad for the environment, but you can save them up to buy more beer!¡¨ Disposal of choice is an aluminum-recycling container. Should one not be available, simply bend can at mid point, with the mouth of can facing up ward and place (don¡¦t throw) on friends floorboard. This technique prevents leakage in your pal¡¦s vehicle should you have a ¡§cheerleader beer¡¨ (beer not completely finished).
I learned many things that day at the lake that I will always remember. Such as, ¡§High Elbow Celebration¡¨ and ¡§Moon boots, one man¡¦s work out equipment¡K another mans device for taking shots while hanging upside down¡¨. I think I will let Mark fill you in on the details.
Hang in there Mr. Cameron! We are praying for you!
